Beat Writer’s Block

Here are a handful of tips that I leverage with my authors when they’re experiencing writer’s block!

⏰ Make time to write and eliminate distractions during that time. It doesn’t matter how much or little time you may have. Set a timer for that long, turn the Wi-Fi off on your computer, and go! Don’t worry about the quality of what you’re writing, just write. Writing sprints can be super effective for beating slumps and blocks.

🛒 Take your characters on an adventure and see what they reveal to you. This tip comes from Emily Henry, who stated that she will have her characters do a totally out of context activity and then see what they tell her. This often helps her get back on track with her plotted story.

🙇‍♀️ Do a character deep dive. Grab a checklist and go over what you’ve revealed about your character so far. Diving deep into who you’ve crafted so far is a great way to reveal gaps and identify ways to fill them.

📣 Read the last two paragraphs you’ve written aloud. This will help you to see if there’s a spot where things derail, and give you a good idea of what should come next.

☕️ Take a break. If you’re truly stuck and no ideas are flowing, take a step back and relax. When you return with fresh eyes you will likely find that the words flow much more easily.

I hope this helps! If you have any other writer’s block tips I’d love to hear them!

Until next time!
